    Warning
Most visits to Cameroon are trouble-free.

It is advised against all travel to the area bordering the Central African Republic and Chad, where armed banditry is common.

It is advised against all travel along the Meiganga-Ngaoundere road and to the Belel area due to cases of banditry (including carjackings). Extreme care should be excercised if traveling on any other route between the north and the south of the country by road, especially if traveling the eastern route through Garoua-Boulai.

It is advised against all travel to the area bordering Nigeria in the region of the Bakassi Peninsula.

Overland travel out of Cameroon can be difficult. Gendarmerie (rural police) detachments are posted along the road between Maroua and the Chadian border. The border with the Republic of Congo is closed.

Cameroon has petty crime (robbery and mugging) but be aware that these attacks frequently involve an unnecessary level of violence.

Armed muggings and banditry are a serious problem throughout Cameroon. Sensible personal security precautions should be taken and a high level of vigilance in public places. It is strongly advised not to resist thieves: people who have done so have been killed.

The threat from terrorism is low but you should be aware of the global risk of indiscriminate terrorist attacks, which could be against civilian targets, including places frequented by foreigners.

It is advised to carry some form of identification at all times (either a residence permit or a certified copy of your passport). Failure to produce such identification can lead to detention by the police.

    Health Care
There are a number of district and private hospitals in Cameroon, although health facilities are not recommended to foreign travelers. Sanitation levels are low, even in the best hospitals and clinics. Facilities outside Yaoundé and Douala are extremely limited. International travelers are strongly advised to take out full medical insurance before departure.

    Note
    1
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required of all travelers over one year of age.

    2
Following WHO guidelines issued in 1973, a cholera vaccination certificate is no longer a condition of entry to Cameroon. However, cholera is a serious risk in this country and precautions are essential. Up-to-date advice should be sought before deciding whether these precautions should include vaccination as medical opinion is divided over its effectiveness.

    3
Immunization against diphtheria, hepatitis A and typhoid is recommended. Poliomyelitis is endemic and inoculation is advised. Vaccines are also sometimes advised for hepatitis B, meningococcal meningitis, rabies and tuberculosis.

    4
Malaria risk exists all year throughout the country, predominantly in the malignant falciparum form. Resistance to chloroquine and sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine has been reported. The recommended prophylaxis is mefloquine.
