    Warning
Most visits to Chile are trouble-free but travelers should be aware of the global risk of indiscriminate international terrorist attacks, which could be against civilian targets, including places frequented by foreigners.

The area of Aysen, in the far South, has been experiencing repeated seismic activity since the beginning of April 2007. Visitors are advised to monitor the local press for government warnings and updates. Please also refer to the national emergency website (website: www.onemi.cl) for further information.

Minefields are located in regions I, II and XII. It is recommended to check with the local authorities before traveling to the border areas of these regions.

Travelers should be aware that in past years on 29 March (Day of the Combatant), there have been demonstrations and incidents of violence between police and protestors. The urban centers most likely to be affected are Santiago, Concepcion, Temuco and Antofagasta. In Santiago, there is a particular likelihood of demonstrations in Villa Francia, Poblacion La Bandera, Poblacion La Legua and Poblacion La Pincoya.  Take care to avoid any area in which large crowds are gathering.

In March 2007, the World Health Organization verified reports of Dengue Fever in Chile. Minimise exposure to mosquito bites by covering up and using repellents.

    Health Care
Health insurance is essential. Emergency services can be dialed free (tel: (2) 131 for an ambulance), but for medical emergencies, private services may deliver more modern equipment and a faster response. HELP (tel: (2) 631 0310) is an ambulance service for some of Santiago’s private hospitals. Clínicas (private hospitals) can be contacted directly in the case of a medical emergency.

    Note
    1
Immunization against Yellow Fever is required if going to Easter Island within six days of visiting infected countries.

    2
Immunization against typhoid and Polio are sometimes advised.
